Amid the gang scrawls that litter the walls of their apartment building, Shaolin and Zeke convince Grandmaster Flash (Jaden Smith, in his first leading role for Netflix) to teach them how to sample records. This process, which requires two turntables and a wizardry that resembles something out of a Bruce Lee film, creates the "get down," or rhythm section, of a song that can then be reproduced and looped ad infinitum.
While the gangster narrative is a bit crowded -- Tony-winner Lillias White, as the club owner who's bedding Shao, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Cadillac, her gun-toting rap rival -- The Get Down's other main storyline centers on teenagers who find their identity through music and a sense of community in a world that often rejects them. It's a layered pastiche of Blaxploitation and black family drama, musical comedy and gritty prestige TV that resolves into a gorgeous, sprawling tapestry of music legend and urban history.
