In his immersive installation at Gray Warehouse, Theaster Gates presents a gallery of upcycled materials from the hardware store that was once Halsted Hardware. The store was acquired in 2014 by Gates, who encased volumes of the physical inventory as material testimony to the ephemeral glories of urban retail. His repurposing of the store’s stock recalls the Gospel of Matthew’s command “if someone takes your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.”
