Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court in a landmark judgment has directed the petitioner to plant 75 saplings around his house. The court has ordered the person to plant natural plants like neem, amla, gulmohar etc. The court said it was not enough to just plant the trees but to take proper care of them.
The saplings would be planted by the petitioner under the concerned Horticulture Officer. After this a letter will be issued by the Horticulture Department to the petitioner for planting saplings. The letter will then be entered in the High Court registry. The order was passed by High Court Justice Arun Monga while disposing of a petition filed by Amrik Singh, a resident of Nawanshahr.

Amrik Singh wanted to file a written statement on the pending case before the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) Nawanshahr but could not do so in time. The High Court was told that he was the owner of the car involved in the accident. The petitioner is 90 per cent disabled and unable to walk and therefore cannot attend the court hearing in person. The MACT had refused to record its statement after the deadline and announced the verdict.

The petition appealed to the High Court that failure to file a reply in the defense would cause him an irreparable loss and therefore he should be given a chance. After hearing all the parties, the High Court said that in view of all the facts, it does not appear that the petitioner did not file his reply on purpose, therefore in the interest of justice Has given. The petitioner will have to plant 75 evergreens in return for a fine of Rs. 10,000.
