Warming up for the Oscars
Mank, on Netflix and Titanium TV
Nomadland is the favorite in all bets, but not mine. As much as I like Chloé Zhao - she recently recommended her previous film - and this poetic story of nomads wounded by American capitalism, I think Mank is the greatly underrated of the candidates competing for the Oscar next April 25.
Its low-profile premiere on Netflix and in some theaters (I don't even remember what wave it was) and the increasingly political agenda of the awards, has made David Fincher's latest film - white, straight and making a movie about no ism - goes more unnoticed than it should. Although Mank beats the nomination record, neither the pre-Oscars nor the media contemplate him winning the 25th.

What difference does it make. At its heart, the film is a beautiful tribute to losers. More specifically, Hollywood's most loser screenwriter, Herman Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman in fiction), who you've probably never heard of despite being the author of one of cinema's masterpieces, Citizen Kane. Not coincidentally, Mank is the two-stroke story of the writing of this script, a tribute to 1930s Hollywood and noir that will delight any movie buff.
