HOW FAST CAN A SKATEBOARD RUN?
Skateboarding is not only well-known for its amazing tricks and stunning performances from professional skaters but this sport is also known as a fast-riding sport with the maximum speed of the skaters can be up to 50mph. In fact, a lot of people come to skateboarding, especially longboarding because they want to experience an insane speed.
Therefore, many people when they first learn to skateboard often consider very carefully the average speed of a skateboard so that they can know whether it suits their needs or not. Since SkateAdvisors already had a detailed post about the speed of different skateboards, I would like to make the summary in this short thread so that beginners can grab the best information.
When referring to speed, many people are confused by two concepts of average speed and average velocity. Luckily, you don’t have to be great at Physics to understand this post. The average speed refers to the speed you are traveling while the average velocity is a vector representing both your speed and the direction you are traveling.
There are formulas to calculate these parameters but I don’t want to mention them here. If you want a normal speed, you can purchase a regular skateboard; however, you may want to take a look at electric skateboards for an easy ride without too much effort spent on pushing.
SHORTBOARDS
Shortboards that are often equipped with small and hard wheels are usually used for performing tricks; therefore, the average speed of this type of skateboard is only about 1 to 2 mph. However, for people who are desperately working on a skateboarding trick, this is a suitable option. Moreover, skaters should follow the guide by SkateAdvisors on vimeo to know the right way to perform a trick
LONGBOARDS
This is the largest type of skateboard with enhanced stability due to the lower center of mass. Also, longboards are well-known for their insane speed thanks to the construction of the board with larger wheels. In my experience, the average speed of a longboard is from 8 to 9 mph.
PENNY BOARDS
Penny boards are also known as short cruiser boards with plastic decks. You can not expect a high speed with a penny board like a longboard since the smaller size and poorer quality prevent this type of skateboard from achieving the maximum speed.
CRUISER BOARDS
Actually, cruiser boards can be understood as the smaller version of longboards with a shorter length. The typical application of these boards is to cruise around the neighborhood or can be used as an alternative means of transport. While longboards can travel up to 9 mph, the average speed for a cruiser board is only about 5 to 7 mph.
Many people can not distinguish between a longboard and a cruiser board; therefore, they can easily pick the wrong product. To avoid this unnecessary mistake, I suggest you check out the articles written by SkateAdvisors on gravatar to see the differences.
Hopefully, this short thread can help you understand the average speed of some typical types of skateboards
