Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) involves identifying and analyzing traumatic events in the person's life. Often used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), this therapy has many commonalities with eating disorders. PTSD and eating disorders share features of dissociation, impulsive behavior, and cognitive disturbance. Each therapy involves several phases, starting with an assessment. Depending on the severity and type of eating disorder, cognitive processing therapy may not be appropriate. Types of treatment Different types of eating disorders therapy can be extremely helpful. Peer-led therapy focuses more on emotional support and social interaction, while evidence-based therapy focuses on eating disorder-related irrational beliefs. Both group and one-on-one therapy can be useful, but they are often not as effective as a combination of both. Here are some common types of therapy: Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) involves learning how to resist compulsive behaviors. It usually involves weekly individual and group sessions and focuses on the psychological and social factors that trigger eating disorder behaviors. Unlike many other forms of therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy is increasingly used for eating disorders. It can help individuals overcome their fears of forbidden foods and reduce binge and purge behaviors. These types of therapy may be especially effective for people suffering from anorexia or bulimia.
