Muhammadiyah University Prof. Dr. HAMKA (hereinafter referred to as UHAMKA) is a private tertiary institution belonging to the Muhammadiyah Association located in Jakarta. As one of Muhammadiyah's charitable endeavors, UHAMKA is a tertiary institution with Islamic beliefs that originates from the Al-Quran and As-Sunnah and is based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution which carries out the duties of chess dharma of Muhammadiyah Higher Education, namely organizing the development of piety and faith in Allah SWT, education and teaching, research, and community service according to Islamic guidance.

UHAMKA is a change in form from the Muhammadiyah Jakarta Teaching and Education Institute (IKIP) with the initial name Teacher Education College (PTPG). PTPG was inaugurated on 25 Rabiul Awal 1377 H/18 November 1957 AD, with the founders including Arso Sosroatmodjo (Chairman) and HS Prodjokusumo (Secretary). In line with government policy, in 1958 PTPG changed to the Teaching and Education Faculty (FKIP) which was affiliated to the Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta (UMJ). In the same year, FKIP was entrusted by the Bureau of Religious Education, Ministry of Religion, to train its employees to become quality PGA teachers.

In 1965, FKIP UMJ stood alone under the name IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta (IKIP-MJ) and from 1979 to 1990 won the trust of the government to manage the Diploma Program for Education Personnel Projects. Then from 1990 to 1997 IKIP-MJ was entrusted with managing the Elementary School Teacher Education Program (PGSD). The D2 PGSD program then continued until 2007, even in 2007 UHAMKA (name change from IKIP-MJ to UHAMKA since 1997) was given the trust to organize the Regular PGSD Undergraduate Program as well as the Distance Learning Program (PJJ). Apart from that, UHAMKA was also entrusted with implementing the Teacher Certification Program and Teacher Professional Education, this trust was very impressive and encouraging because it was only given to a very large number of private universities in Indonesia.

Para pengelola IKIP-MJ melihat bahwa IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta perlu ditingkatkan terus peranannya untuk turut serta menyediakan SDM yang berkualitas, baik di bidang kependidikan maupun non-kependidikan, karena itu salah satu upaya yang ditempuh adalah dengan mengkonversi IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta menjadi Universitas. Untuk itu dibentuk Tim Konversi Universitas yang diketuai oleh Prof. Drs. H. Sudarno Sinduwiryo, M.Ed. Setelah melalui berbagai proses, Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan melalui Dirjen DIKTI Depdikbud memutuskan dan menetapkan perubahan bentuk IKIP-MJ menjadi Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. DR. HAMKA dengan Keputusan Dirjen Dikti Depdikbud No. 138/DIKTI/Kep/1997, tanggal 30 Mei 1997.

Regarding the use of Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (more popularly and familiarly called HAMKA) as the name of this college based on the agreement of Buya HAMKA's extended family with Muhammadiyah Central Executive which was ratified through a written memorandum of understanding. Name Prof. Dr. HAMKA was chosen because this character has an extraordinary spirit in independent learning (self-taught), complete, and lasts a lifetime. Prof. Dr. HAMKA is a multi-dimensional figure with various expertise, namely an intellectual scholar, a scholarly intellectual, an expert and unique writer, as well as an accomplished journalist and preacher of Muhammadiyah. Buya HAMKA's character is getting stronger with his appointment as a National Hero in 2011.

The submission of the Director General of Higher Education's Decree on the name UHAMKA was carried out by the Kopertis Region III Coordinator on June 9, 1997. Subsequently it was announced publicly by the Chairperson of PP Muhammadiyah, Dr. HM. Amien Rais, M.A. at the Graduation Ceremony of the IKIP-MJ Diploma Program and the Inauguration of the Muhammadiyah University Prof. Dr. HAMKA on June 11, 1997, at the Jakarta Convention Center (Jakarta Hilton Convention Centre) as well as inaugurating the Chancellor of IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta, Drs. H. Qomari Anwar, MA. became Chancellor of Muhammadiyah University Prof. Dr. HAMKA the first.
