In 1901, the state legislature decided to make the bluebonnet the official state flower of Texas. A heated debate over the prickly pear cactus and cotton boll ensued, but those two lost out to the beautiful native wildflower whose flowers resembled pioneer-era bonnets.

The initial choice was Lupinus subcarnosus, also known as the sandyland bluebonnet. However, a movement began to push for the heartier Lupinus texensis which blankets south Texas. In 1971, the legislature clarified that the umbrella clause made both species and any new ones discovered to be state flowers.
