Classification of Printers

Typically, we can observe the following common types of printers:
Laser Printer

A laser printer utilizes laser technology to function. It operates by using a laser beam to project data onto a drum. The drum rotates and attracts toner (which consists of fine particles) onto it. The paper is designed to move past the drum, and the toner adheres to the paper. Subsequently, the paper passes through two heated rollers to dry the toner and firmly bond it to the paper upon exiting the printer.

Laser printers are widely used for office printing due to their good printing speed, low per-page printing cost, and user-friendliness. Laser printers come in two types: monochrome and color laser printers.

Inkjet Printer

An inkjet printer works based on the principle of spraying ink through small nozzles (print heads) at high speeds (approximately 5,000 times per second) to create dots. These ink dots, when viewed collectively, form the printed image. Inkjet printers are primarily capable of printing in multiple colors, achieved by blending basic ink colors together.

Dot Matrix Printer

A dot matrix printer utilizes a mechanism that involves striking pins against an ink ribbon to create printed elements on the paper. Nowadays, dot matrix printers are commonly found in certain shops and supermarkets for printing low-cost receipts and invoices as compact devices.

Screen Printing Machine

A screen printing machine is used to replace manual labor involved in tasks such as stretching screens or printing on special products (e.g., circular-shaped items) in the screen printing industry.

Screen printing machines come in various types, designs, and speeds. Each type of screen printing machine may have different operating methods depending on specific cases. These machines have significantly increased productivity in the screen printing industry.
Offset Printer

An offset printer employs the principle of transferring inked images onto rubber plates, which are then used to transfer the image onto paper through the pressure between the rubber cylinder and paper as it passes through.

Letterpress Printer

A letterpress printer is a high-precision printing technology in which raised printing elements receive ink when the machine applies ink and transfers it onto the printing material (usually paper). Letterpress printers often use lead-cast typefaces.

Flexographic Printer

A flexographic printer is a type of letterpress printer that uses flexible printing plates made from a photopolymerization process. Flexographic printing is commonly used for printing labels, decals, or corrugated cardboard boxes.

Gravure Printer

A gravure printer employs an intaglio technique, where printing elements are recessed into a metal surface (printing cylinder). Ink is supplied to the surface of the printing cylinder, filling the recessed areas of the printing elements. A doctor blade removes excess ink from the surface of the cylinder. During printing, ink in the recessed areas is transferred to the printing material under pressure.

3D Printer
A 3D printer is a relatively new type of printer that has emerged recently. It utilizes a technique called material extrusion, where the material is heated and then deposited layer by layer to create three-dimensional objects with specific properties.
