Asphalt Pavement Composition: Grading, Sloping, and Sub-base Preparation
Grading and Sloping
When it comes to asphalt pavement composition, the preparation of the surface is crucial for effective water drainage. Asiagilsonite’s asphalt professionals utilize advanced technology, including laser-guided transits and automatic motor graders, to meticulously grade the surface. This careful grading ensures optimal water runoff, which is vital for the longevity of asphalt surfaces. Water is a primary catalyst for damages such as potholes, cracks, and heaving, making proper drainage a top priority.
Preparing the Sub-base
Although often overlooked, the sub-base is an indispensable element of any asphalt pavement installation. Its importance cannot be overstated, as it serves several critical functions:
Frost Protection: A well-prepared sub-base acts as a shield against the detrimental effects of frost heave caused by the cyclical freezing and thawing of the ground.
Structural Stability: It provides a sturdy foundation that can withstand the weight and traffic load of the newly laid pavement, ensuring the surface's longevity and resilience.
Enhanced Durability: The sub-base offers a compacted and reliable support system for roads or parking lots, enhancing their overall durability over time.
Proof Rolling and Sub-base Repair Strategies
Once the sub-base has been thoroughly graded and compacted, Asiagilsonite performs a crucial step known as proof rolling. This process involves using a quad-axle dump truck loaded with 72,000 pounds to systematically drive over the entire surface. If the gravel flexes more than an inch under this weight, it indicates inadequate support.
Should any weak areas be identified during the proof roll, Asiagilsonite promptly addresses these issues to ensure the overall stability of the sub-base.
Effective Repair Methods:
Undercutting: This technique involves excavating the compromised ground by 2 to 3 feet and replacing weak clay or soil with stronger aggregate material, effectively reinforcing the area.
Geo-grid Utilization: Another innovative approach is to excavate just 16 inches below the surface and lay down a grid that connects the base materials, creating a solid support structure while significantly reducing costs compared to traditional methods.
Plowing Technique: Asiagilsonite has also pioneered a method known as plowing, where the soft clay and soil are mixed with additional aggregate rather than being completely removed. This enhances the strength of compromised areas in a more efficient and cost-effective manner.
