Nurse informaticists use information technology to help healthcare organizations improve care and patient outcomes. They focus on a wide range of healthcare systems, from patient portals to electronic medical records and computerized provider order entry. Nursing informatics is a rapidly growing field that incorporates nursing, computer science, and information science. It can be a rewarding career path for nurses who are interested in working with information technology and helping healthcare organizations. A patient portal is a tool that gives patients online access to their electronic health records (EHRs). This is an effective way for healthcare providers to meet Meaningful Use criteria.
To achieve this, providers must incorporate patient portals into their practices. This improves patients' engagement with care and helps promote better health outcomes. The use of patient portals is not without challenges. For example, patients are reluctant to use them due to concerns about privacy. To overcome these barriers, nursing informatics must encourage patient participation as partners in the development of portals. This will allow providers to understand their patients' expectations and guide implementation. Moreover, implementing a patient portal should be considered as part of a wider initiative to improve patient-centered care.
Electronic medical records (EMRs) are the digital equivalent of a paper chart, which can be used by physicians and other healthcare professionals to record patients’ history, treatment, and diagnosis. EMRs are designed to make it easier for healthcare professionals to provide efficient, accurate care.
Nurse informaticists have a vital role in ensuring that healthcare providers are able to use technology in their everyday practice. They are involved in all aspects of system selection, implementation, and training of technologies that improve care delivery. A patient’s electronic medical record is a comprehensive, longitudinal collection of all of their health information that can be used by any provider. As a result, patients can be more engaged in their own care and become better advocates for their health. Electronic medical records are beneficial to both providers and patients, as they save a lot of space when compared with traditional paper records. They also allow for easy exchange of information among different healthcare facilities.
Computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems enable clinicians to enter orders into a workstation, laptop or secure mobile device instead of writing them on a paper chart. This digitized format decreases errors related to handwriting prescriptions and other types of order data by eliminating ambiguous and omitted information. CPOE also improves the speed and accuracy of ordering medications, laboratory, admission, radiology, referral and procedure requests. Studies show that the use of CPOE can reduce medication error rates by 80% and prevent medical errors that have potential for serious harm or death. To make sure that CPOE is effective, order sets should be built with the best medical evidence available and reviewed at least every 6 months to ensure they are in line with current clinical guidelines. Companies like Zinx Health and Provation Medical offer order set review services to help improve CPOE and ensure it is in line with the latest clinical guidelines.
Using informatics to improve patient outcomes is one of the most important ways nursing informaticists influence health care. This practice helps ensure that patients receive the best care possible while increasing efficiency and safety in the process. Nurse informaticists work to identify and integrate data from numerous sources and then analyze this information to improve patient outcomes. This can include data from a patient's medical history, biometrics, and pharmacy records, among other things.
Healthcare organizations use informatics to provide a more coordinated approach to care by implementing systems that streamline workflow and communication. This improves the quality of care, reduces the risk of errors, and cuts down on the amount of time patients spend in hospitals. As the world’s healthcare industry continues to evolve, nursing informaticists are crucial for ensuring that new technologies are used efficiently and effectively to improve patient care. They also help nurses and other providers manage their workloads more effectively by providing them with the tools they need to perform their duties more efficiently.
