John Wayne

John Wayne Oscar-díjas amerikai színész Marion Robert Morrison néven 1907. május 26.–án született az Iowa-i Winterset-ben.

Presbiteriánus családból származik, édesapja Clyde Leonard Morrison, édesanyja Mary Alberta Brown. A család 1911-ben a California állambeli Glendale-be költözött.

A Duke becenevet a kiskutyájáról kapta. Gyermekként szívesen sétáltatta a Little Duke nevû Airedale terrier kutyát, így a szomszédok ráragasztották a Big Duke nevet, amely annyira tetszett neki, hogy késõbb maga is megtartotta.
Népszerû és jó tanuló diák volt és kiváló testi adottságainak köszönhetõen tagja majd egyik sztárja lett a glendalei középiskola futball csapatának.

Jelentkezett a tengerészeti akadémiára, de mivel oda nem nyert felvételt, végül a kaliforniai egyetemre került, ahol több diákszövetség tagja lett, illetve az ottani egyetemi futball csapatában is szerepelt. Egy nagyobb sérülése után viszont, amit úszás közben szerzett, elvágta a sportolói pályafutását. Ezzel együtt sportolói ösztöndíját is elvesztette, így pénz hiányában kénytelen volt egyetemi tanulmányait abbahagyni.

Még az egyetemen töltött ideje alatt dolgozni kezdett a helyi filmstúdióban. Ahol végül statiszta munkákat is kapott, illetve barátságot kötött John Ford rendezõvel.

Színész karrierjét az 1920-as években némafilmekben kezdte, de tehetségét akkor még kevéssé ismerték el. Késõbb a western és a II. világháborús filmek hozták meg számára az igazi elismerést és láthattuk életrajzi filmekben, romantikus vígjátékokban illetve drámákban is.
Mûvészete során 24 díjat, és 16 jelölést kapott. Az Oscar-díjat 1970-ben vehette át A félszemû/True Grit címû western filmben nyújtott alakításáért.

Háromszor házasodott. Elsõ felesége Josephine Alicia Saenz volt. Házasságuk 1933. június 24 - 1945. december 25.-ig tartott és kapcsolatukból 4 gyermek ( Michael Wayne-producer, Patrick Wayne-színész, Toni Wayne-színésznõ és Melinda Wayne-színésznõ ) született. Második feleségével Esperanza Baur-al 1946. január 17-én házasodtak össze, majd 1953. November 1-én elváltak. Harmadik házassága Pilar Wayne-el 1954. november 1-étõl John Wayne haláláig tartott, ebbõl a kapcsolatból 3 gyermek ( Aissa Wayne-színésznõ, Ethan Wayne-színész és Marisa Wayne-színésznõ ) született.

Az 1940-es évektõl egészen a 1970-es évekig tartó munkásságának köszönhetõen Amerika egyik stabil jelképévé válhatott.
72 évesen, 1979. június 11.-én a California-i Los Angeles-ben hunyt el tüdõ-és gyomorrákban.
