Michael Stipe

John Michael Stipe 1960. január 4-én látta meg a napvilágot Decatourban, Georgiában. Édesapja az amerikai hadseregben szolgált, így a család gyakran költözött. Gyerekkoráról jóformán semit nem lehet tudni, hiszen az énekes igen ritkán említi fiatalkorát.

Mivel mindig is vonzódott a művészethez, így egyetemi tanulmányait a University of Georgián végezte, festészet és fényképészet szakon. Az egyetem azonban nem csak az általa áhított tudást, hanem új barátokat is tartogatott a fiatal Michael számára, ugyanis itt ismerkedett meg későbbi zenekara, az R.E.M. tagjaival, Mike Mills-szel, Bill Berry-vel és Peter Buckkal 1980-ban. Érdekesség, hogy az éneklés mellett nem csak gitáron, hanem szájharmónikán is játszik, valamint érdeklődést mutatott korábban a filmkészítés iránt is, így Single Cell néven alapított céget, mely végül egészen jó otletnek bizonyult, ugyanis producerként tevékenyen vett részt  a Velvet Goldmine, az Amerikai pszichó és A John Malkovich menet című filmek készítésénél.

A szexualitására vonatkozó pletykák akkor kaptak szárnyra, amikor az R.E.M. sikeres lett. Elmondása szerint ő queer művésznek tartja magát, aki mind a nőkhöz, mind a férfiakhoz vonzódik, ám élete párját egy férfi személyében találta meg. 1992-ben elterjedt a pletyka, miszerint megfertőződött a HIV vírussal, ám ez nem volt igaz.

A 90-es években olyan világhírű zenekarok inspirálója volt, mint a Nirvana, a Pearl Jam vagy a Radiohead. A Nirvanához olyan közel került, hogy a zenekar forntembere, Kurt Cobain felkérte őt arra, hogy legyen lányának, Frances Bean Cobainnak a keresztapja - mely tisztséget Michael boldogan vállalta is. A keresztanyai szerep pedig Drew Barrymore-t illette meg. Napjainkban is jó kapcsolatot ápol Cobain özvegyével, Courtney Love-val és Marilyn Mansonnal is.
