Tony Plana

Tony Plana - eredeti nevén José Antonio Plana - kubai film- és színházi színész, valamint rendező 1952. április 19-én született Havannában, Kubában.
Édesapja, Pepe, és édesanyja, Conchita, bankárként dolgoztak Havannában, ám a Fidel Castro vezette forradalom győzelme után az USA-ba, Miamiba menekültek 1960-ban, majd Culver City-ben telepedtek le, ahol az apa munkát kapott egy Tootsie Roll-gyárban. (Édesanyja Alzheimer-kórban szenved és 2005 óta egy intézetben él.)
Két öccse született, Victor és Oscar.

A Loyola Marymount University-n végzett, majd színjátszást tanult a neves londoni Royal Academy of Dramatic Art-on.

Színjátszás

Színészi karrierje 1978-ban indult, amikor egy epizód erejéig feltűnt a What's Happening!! című TV-sorozatban Amid szerepében, majd Juant alakította a The Boss' Son című filmben. Következő évben már négy sorozatban játszott egy-egy epizódban (The Paper Chase, The Streets of L.A., Quincy M.E., Barnaby Jones).

A nyolcvanas években egyre több lehetőséget kapott, hogy megmutassa a tehetségét. Egyaránt játszott filmekben (a jelentősebbek közül: Circle of Power, An Officer and a Gentleman, Sadat, Salvador, ¡Three Amigos! ) és sorozatokban - egyelőre csak egy-egy epizód erejéig (House Calls, Cagney & Lacey, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Remington Steele, T.J. Hooker, Hill Street Blues, It's Garry Shandling's Show, Miami Vice, The Equalizer, L.A. Law, 21 Jump Street, Falcon Crest).

A kilencvenes években is akadt bőven munkája. Többek között olyan sorozatokban kapott epizódszerepet, mint a Drug Wars: The Camarena Story, Hunter, Beauty and the Beast, Seinfeld, Tequila and Bonetti, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, ER, Murder, She Wrote, Nash Bridges, vagy az Ally McBeal - valamint olyan filmekben játszhatott, mint a The Rookie, Havana, One Good Cop, JFK - A nyitott dosszié, Nixon, Primar Fear vagy a Shadow of Doubt.
A Bakersfield P.D. sorozatában már 17 epizódban játszotta Luke Ramirezt - ez volt az első jelentős sorozatszerepe.

A kétezres években egyaránt játszott filmekben (a jelentősebbek közül: Noriega: God's Favorite, Vegas, City of Dreams, Fidel, The Lost City) és sorozatokban - egy vagy több epizód erejéig (City of Angels, Clifford the Big Red Dog, The West Wing, As Told by Ginger, Less Than Perfect, John Doe, Monk, Dragnet, JAG, The Division, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, 24, The Closer, Commander in Chief).
Ebben az évtizedben két sorozatban főbb szerepet kapott. 2000 és 2002 között a Resurrection Blvd. sorozatában Roberto Santiago-t alakította, majd 2006 és 2010 között a népszerű Ugly Betty / Címlapsztori című sorozatban a főszereplő édesapját, Ignacio Suarezt játszotta el.

2010-ben egy epizódban tűnt fel a Royal Pains című sorozatban, majd kisebb szerepet kapott a Change Your Life! és a Flowers for Norma című filmekben.
2011-ben öt epizód erejéig Alejandro Perezt alakította a népszerű Desperate Housewives / Született feleségek sorozatában, majd játszott a Law & Order: LA, Body of Proof és a Los Americans című sorozatokban, és az America című filmben.
2012-ben a közönség a Person of Interest / Célszemély, Blue Bloods, Blue, és a Harry's Law sorozataiban láthatta, valamint a The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez című filmben. 2013-ban olyan filmekben játszott, mint a Meddling Mom, Pain & Gain, Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret és A Miracle in Spanish Harlem, majd epizódszereplőként tűnt fel a Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Psych és az Alpha House sorozataiban.

2017-ben ismét feltűnt epizódszereplőként olyan sorozatokban, mint a One Day at a Time, Madam Secretary, Superstore, StartUp, The Fosters és a Colony, emellett TV- és mozifilmekben is kapott szerepet (Butterfly Caught, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands: War Within the Cartel, Roman J. Israel, Esq.). Ugyanebben az évben a The Punisher hat epizódjában jelent meg.
2018-ben olyan sorozatokban játszott, mint a Mayans M.C., Shooter, Elementary, Bull, One Day at a Time és a Lethal Weapon és a hangját kölcsönözte az Elena of Avalor egyik karakterének.
2019-ben olyan sorozatokban kapott epizódszerepet, mint a Playing with Fire, The Affair, Room 104, Victor & Valentino és a Dynasty, valamint olyan filmekben, mint a Bombshell és a Seneca.
2020-ban három sorozatban játszott néhány epizód erejéig (Connecting, Deputy, Enemigo Intimo).
2021-ben olyan sorozatokban játszott, mint a The Good Fight és a David Makes Man.
2023-ban a The White House Plumbers és a Not Dead Yet sorozatában és az A Snowy Day in Oakland filmjében szerepelt, emellett a hangját kölcsönözte a The Legend of Vox Machina egyik karakterének.

Egyéb tevékenységei

Nemcsak számos televíziós sorozatban és filmben játszott már kisebb-nagyobb szerepeket, hanem színházi rendezőként és íróként is jól ismert Los Angeles, Washington és New York kisebb társulatainál, valamint színjátszást tanít a California State University, Dominguez Hills és Rio Hondo College oktatási intézményeiben. Emellett a hangját kölcsönözte a Grim Fandango, a Scarface: The World Is Yours, Star Wars: Force Commander, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay és a The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena című videójátékok egy-egy karakterének. 2012-ben a Noor iráni film fesztivál zsűrijének elnöke volt.
A politikai életben is igyekszik aktív szerepet játszani. Ő a bevándorlókkal kapcsolatos reformok egyik szóvivője (Comprehensive Immigration Reform) és a 2012-ben a floridai Coronado Springs Convention Centerben megrendezett LULAC konferenciáján is felszólalt.

Magánélete

1988-ban feleségül vette a színésznő Ada Maris-t, akitől két gyermeke született: Alejandro és Isabel .
