Magánélet

Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz egy New York-ban született.
A sztár egy zsidó családból származik. Anyja Marian, de leánykori nevin Laskin, oktatási tanácsadó, és tanár.
Az apja, (2013-ban elhunyt június 8-án) Donald Leibowitz néven született, aki fizika professzora a The College of New Yersey-nek, és a Thomas Edison State College-nek.
A szülei elváltak amikor Stewart tizenegy éves volt, ezért ő és az apja nem ápoltak jó kapcsolatot egymással. Jelenleg egy boldog házasságban él, két gyermekkel. 1984-ben kapta meg a diplomáját.

Karrier

Pályafutását a stand-up homoristaként kezde, majd első TV szereplését a Short Attention Span Theater c. Comedy Central-műsor házigazda ként kezde. Majd később az MTV-nél dolgozott, ugyan is
szerepet kapott a The Jon Stewart Show-ban, és a You Wrote It, You Watch It című sorozatban is. Ezt követően majd sok filmben fog szerepet kapni. 1999-ben egy műsor írója, co-producere lett a The Daily Show-ban.
Jon ezt követően egyre nagyobb sikereket ért el, ugyan is Emmy-díjat is kapott, 2001-ben (első).
Majd újságírónak járó kitüntetésre is jelölték. A 78. Oscar gálán ő lett a házigazda, bár igaz, nem volt megelégedve a munkájával. Így a 80. díjátadón jobban teljesített.

Olyan filmekben kapott szerepet, mint például: The Beaver, Doogal, vagy Big Daddy. Jelenleg a Phienies & Ferb c. Disney sorozatban szinkronizál, ahol Mr. Random hangját kölcsönzi. 2013-ban szerepelt egy rész eréig a Big Time Rush című sorozatban ( Big Time Invasion).

- 2004-ben megjelent egy könyve, mely a  A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction néven futott, s ez a könyv 2010-ben kapott egy folytatást a Earth (The Book): A Visitor's Guide to the Human Race néven,

- Szereti a környezetében lévő embereket,

- Az iskolában antiszemita bántásoknak lett az áldozata. 

2014-ben a Rosewater rendezője, producere és írója lett, s 2015-ben a The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore-nak lesz majd  az exluzív producere.
